UELN is only available in English
UELN / The internationally used Universal Equine Life Number is scarcely accessible in German on the official website – a private overview now provides a solution.
COURTEPIN Anyone working with the Universal Equine Life Number (UELN) – whether as a breeding organisation, stud book or association – is familiar with the problem: whilst the official website ueln.net features some German text, all menu links lead to English-language pages. Anyone wishing to know the rules governing the allocation of a UELN, how an organisation applies for its own code, or how data is exchanged between studbooks has, until now, only been able to find the answers in English or French.
Rules and EU context
The UELN is a 15-digit alphanumeric number comprising the code of the registering database and a national identification number. Since the EU Implementing Regulation 2021/963 came into force, it has been an integral part of the official equine identification system: every competent authority must assign a UELN-compatible code to its databases so that a horse’s provenance can be clearly traced throughout Europe.
Data exchange between studbooks
Until now, when importing a horse, passport details had to be entered manually into the relevant database – with the associated risk of errors. New technical solutions such as ‘Horselink’ are set to automate this exchange between central databases, stud books and associations in future.
Overview bridges the gap
Haflinger-Pentagon Sàrl-GmbH has therefore translated the key sections of the UELN website into German (using Swiss spelling) and compiled them into a concise document. It is aimed at breeding organisations, authorities and anyone who works with the UELN without needing to rely on a knowledge of English.
